Beautiful Garden City Beach is Horry County's most southern strip of beach, and its unofficial boundaries encompass both Horry and Georgetown counties. Many locals consider it part of Murrell's Inlet, since it is unincorporated and seems to blend into the inlet with its own channels and marshlands.

Hurricane Hugo in the 80's destroyed many of the older homes and low rise condos, and when rebuilt, the beach real estate came back as one of the more costly areas in the Grand Strand. Homes and condos are more expensive, more lavish, and have an exclusive feel to them that attracts the wealthy retirees wanting privacy and a more natural, secluded beach.
